The Corner of the City

When I want to tell my children what I’ve seen,
I will describe a wall.
What I want to tell my children what I’ve heard,
I will describe a symphony.
When I want to tell my children what I’ve experienced,
I will describe a book.
And only then will they know what this alley looks like,
or what the crickets, cats, and arguments sound like,
bouncing from brick to brick,
or the horrors await them in the dark hours of the night
as the cold sets in and the previous day remembers them
no more.
