If Love Was A Story

by Stephen Paden

What if love was only a story?
A tale for children who need to sleep.
A song for a man who begs forgiveness.
A poem for a blind woman, who wants to see.

What if love was only a story?
A book left open in a library.
A book whose words reveal the future.
A phrase that tells us everything.

What if love was only a story?
A tale you told someone you didn’t know.
A door held open for a stranger.
An opening where love could grow.

What if love meant trying something?
Some stupid trick you used to know.
Some way to show you knew what love was.
Some way to prove that you have grown.

What if love meant showing affection?
Your hand to another, reaching out.
A simple movement of your body.
A simple gesture filled with doubt.

What if love meant doing something?
Some stupid thing you’ve done before.
Some parlor trick for entertaining.
Some stupid thing you used to know.

And what if love was only a story?
A tale for children fighting sleep.
A song for a man afraid of dying.
A poem for a blind woman, afraid to see.
