The Desert

I was so thirsty
When I went for a walk in the desert
A dry wind from the east
blew over me
the thirst grew louder in my head and my throat
as I walked over dunes of sand
That stretched for as long as I could see
Sea…that’s really what a desert is:
A vast dry sea
Where the living come to die
But the snakes and scorpions do okay
At the end of the day

I was so thirsty
When I went for a walk in the desert
A full moon overhead
Illuminated my world
the sand that burned my feet that day
now soothed them
and the dry, easterly wind turned cold
across this ancient seabed
the snakes and the scorpions
would most likely agree
that at the end of the day
when the sun had gone away
that this barren expanse
was for me
