The Aftermath

By Stephen Paden

Just friends, then more;
just two that became one,
a single heart beating
while the bricks and mortar fell down
around them.

When the dust settled
and the stones made their last sound,
a faint thump echoed through the destruction;
barely audible, it became louder
and louder
until the sounds of the heart
rose up from the rubble, deafened the heartless,
and broke the world.
