by Stephen Paden

A light once lived inside of me
so bright that everyone could see
but when the embers blew away
my darkness lived another day

So cold the mornings and the nights
so hazy were the far-off sights
of mountains, streams, and aging trees
all trapped within the misty freeze

Straight down into my bones it found
the last remaining light and sound
and took from me into its soul
my life; leaving but a hole

So deep that I could never see
the light above that laughed at me
far in the depths of barren ground
a darkness no one ever found
